Continuing our series of articles about domain name, today we would like to analyse the statistic of domain TLD that was registered throughout the world. Hopefully this statistics, will provide you some insight in choosing the right domain TLD for your domain.
We will analyse the popularity of the domain extension by TLD type, i.e. gTLD, ccTLD and new TLD. If you are unfamiliar with this terms, I would suggest you refer to our previous articles on this here .
Popular gTLD
At the date this report was written, .com still account to more than 85% (more than 118 million domain name) of the domain TLD registered follows by .net and .org with more than 8% and 6% respectively. The rest are less than 1% which is quite understandable given that such domain such as .mil, .gov, etc are not necessarily open to the public for registration. It is no surprise that .com still dominates in this category.

Popular ccTLD
For ccTLD, it is not surprise that the most popular ccTLD is .tk ( for Tokelau Island under the territory of New Zealand) which offers free domain name initially, however recently certain domain name with used word that is considered special (e.g. brand name, word in dictionary), you may have to pay some minimal price. .tk accounts for more than 11% of ccTLD registered today.
The next popular ccTLD is .cn for China, .de for Germany, .uk for United Kingdom and .ru for Rusia. The rest of ccTLD account for less than 5% of the total domain registered under this category.

As mentioned in our previous articles, the ccTLD mentioned popular not necessarily because there is a lot of registered domain owner in the country. Some of them are due to the availability for person outside the country to register the domain name. This is what we sometime refers to gccTLD, i.e. the ccTLD is no longer associated with the domain name from that country but rather been used as an alternative to gTLD. Do you know .me is also ccTLD for the Montenegro?
New gTLD
There is also another category, which we refers to new gTLD as it is not in the original gTLD as well as not representing any country as for ccTLD. The popular TLD under this category .info (at more than 11%) followed by .xyz, .icu and .loan. As compared to .info which has started earlier (in 2003), .xyz which has just started in 2014 is fast catching up. Not to mentioned .icu and .loan.

Overall TLD
If we were to add all the domain TLDs regardless of the category as at the date of this report, .com still account for more than 34% of all the domain registered followed by .tk, .cn, .de, .uk, .net and .org.

Hope the above statistics are able to provide you with some insight into the different type of TLDs and its popularity. Remember Lavender Web Shop can register most of this domain name. Please be sure to check our domain checker form here .
